Union football is an electric atmosphere and has been for years. It’s even more exciting when you know the full scope of what is going on. Here are a few of our favorite Union traditions.
“Turn the Stadium Red”.
One of the newest, the new stadium glows red after each home win. The red lights hit the field, the stadium and onto the UMAC. It’s a beautiful sight after a great night.
“The Alma Mater”.
At the end of each game, no matter the outcome, the players, along with the Pom squad, the Cheerleaders, the other spirit squads, and the students take the field and make their way to the area in front of the band to sing arm-in-arm the school’s Alma Mater. Stick around after the games, it’s a sight to behold.
“The Flag Run”.
After each score, you’ll see the students from the Hype crew sprint from the end zone to midfield and back waiving the UHS flags. Make sure you’re standing for them!
“Hall of Champions”.
The team enters the field through a hallway that boasts giant photos of every Union state champion team. Motivation comes in all areas…
“The Cornerstone”.
Anyone who has even been to a game knows that the students set the tone for the game. When the stadium was remodeled, a piece of concrete from the student section was kept during demolition. Now, when entering the field, players are able to rub “the cornerstone” to connect the old and new!
“The Black Uniforms”.
Union players and fans bleed red and silver, but when the Black uniforms come out, it’s something special. Reserved for playoffs or big games, when you see these sleek unis, get buckled up for a little something extra that night.
“The MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl”.
This once a year rivalry game vs the ‘Maroon school down the street’ is no once-a-year contest; it’s one of the most heated and hotly contested games in the high-school football universe. The game transcends Tulsa and is nationally renowned for the level of the teams involved. In fact, it has been covered by ESPN and has had movies made about it. Most schools have rivalries and some try to promote them, but this game against that team is THE measuring stick. If you haven’t been, circle it on your schedule this year!
